Machismo has been imbedded into the Latinx community so deep, a times we forget it's even there. Machismo is like a haunting energy...cold, dark, deceiving, and feeds off the fearless feminine spirit until there's nothing left but bare bones. Although patriarchal systems were already being practiced during the Pre-Columbian era, the arrival of the Spanish enforced male superiority even more. The only difference was that now things such as race and class played a major role for the different treatment towards different types of women. Nonetheless, Latin America continues being one of the most unsafest regions for women to exist. Why? Is it the lack of national security? The governments failure to enforce laws for women safety? Or does it begin at home, with our own mother's and other important women figures who've taught us that shrinking and remaining silent for the comfort of a man is expected..or else you fall short of being a woman. How can we fix this epidemic of violence, before taking a moment to closely look at our own lives, and see at what points we've failed to be there for each other?
